CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I waited in the scrubland for what felt like hours, noticing the corruption reduce in the shadow bugs but not by much. The doc watched with me, using binoculars Douglas had tucked into his pack at some point. She couldn’t feel everything I could, so I described it to her, and she then repeated it into a recording device.

Pat made regular notes at marked time intervals. It wasn’t a perfect scientific test of the vaccine, but it would give them enough info to start working out what was going on, and I knew it was better than waiting behind the settlement wall, wishing they could be close enough to see.

Out here, I felt like I was making a difference and helping to combat the corruption long-term. Rescuing people and dragons was wonderful, but nothing like defeating the enemy outright.

I waited until more dragons arrived, and the vaccinated shadow bugs seemed to have reached an equilibrium. They weren’t corruption-free, but they didn’t seem to need healing either, as far as I could tell. All of them were out cold and likely to remain that way a little longer.

Although the uncorrupted creatures also kept an eye on them, they continued to reduce in numbers until they were more of a trail of creatures going back and forth along a guarded walkway. Now and then, a bug would leave the trail and come outward a little, almost as if it was checking that the coast was clear and nothing had changed, and then it would go back.

“What do you want to do now? Normally, humans and other species of corrupted creatures we’ve encountered are healed of the corruption by now if the vaccine is a success. I could do with getting samples of their blood and working out how effective it was, and if there is more, we can change to help them.” Dr. Hargreaves looked up at me as if she hoped I would be able to solve her dilemma.

I looked out toward the corrupted bodies again and frowned. The threat was significantly less, but now that we had established a sort of live-and-let-live truce with these creatures, I didn’t want to make them angry again or kill or hurt any more of them.

Finally shifting into human form, I considered the options and how to get the samples collected swiftly. On top of figuring this out, I had to consider everything else. The refugees would need to be taken back to the castle soon, and the dragons who had flown in to help us would need to be brought up to speed with everything that had happened here. I only had a limited army and a lot to protect.

“Can you teach Douglas how to get the samples you need?” I asked the doctor.

“I already know,” Douglas replied for her, and immediately, Pat began to pull out the equipment he would need to collect blood samples from each creature. She gave him a few spares, and he stashed them in various pockets about his uniform.
